With parliamentary election campaigns set to begin on Monday, November 10, 2025, police have reminded candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities in a peaceful and law-abiding manner.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Josephine Angucia, Police Public Relations Officer for the West Nile Region, urged political actors to promote harmony, tolerance, and mutual respect while campaigning.
Angucia cautioned against acts such as destroying or defacing opponents’ posters, using abusive language, or attacking rival supporters, emphasizing that democracy guarantees every citizen the right to choose leaders freely.
“We want to remind all candidates and their supporters that elections should not be a season of hostility,” SSP Angucia said.
“Respect each other’s opinions and campaign messages because in a democracy, people have the right to choose their leaders without intimidation or violence.”
She stressed that candidates are responsible for guiding their supporters to abide by electoral laws and campaign guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission.
Violations, including poster destruction or provoking violence, may lead to legal action against both the perpetrators and the candidates themselves.
Angucia also urged the public and political groups not to provoke or attack security forces, highlighting the police’s role in ensuring safety for all participants during the campaigns.
“Our role is to secure the process and protect everyone, regardless of their political affiliation,” she said. “Let’s all work together to make the 2026 elections peaceful. Together, we can have violence-free elections.”
The West Nile Police PRO added that security agencies are prepared to provide equal protection to all candidates and called on media, civil society, and community leaders to actively promote messages of peace throughout the campaign season.
